Testimonial for Jordan Chark

By Ethan Fortes | January 13, 2008

I started writing a testimonial for Jordan Chark on flickr, but it got a little off topic and I thought this would be an appropriate place to post it: I’ve known Jordan for… a long time, since about the age of 5, and only really befriended him last year, when I saw him on his MacBook in the corner of the Socials room, and told him about InterFaceLift, not knowing that he too was a fellow geek, who had just recently (like a week before) gotten his MacBook.

At this time I was still a Windows user, running a Vista beta on a 256mb/RAM machine, but I soon (3 months later) followed Jordan and got a MacBook. We started a blog called Macweek, still viewable at http://mactropolis.wordpress.com, which died soon after Jordan joined MacApper. Jordan got his SLR this summer, and learned the art of photography quickly.

Occasionally we’ll meet up at his or my house and go out for a photowalk, where I take all my photos, and develop my own style of SLR photography.

He’s a really smart geek and a great friend. =)

New Baby Brother.

By Ethan Fortes | January 13, 2008

So, long time no post, but this is some big news. We, my family, have adopted a baby boy. He’s from a city (village) called Vernon, in northern BC. We got him about a week ago, and he’s 8 months old. His name’s Elijah.  He lived with his foster family from the day he was born.

Due to dangerous weather conditions, we could not return to Vancouver and were therefore stuck in a cramped hotel room with an unfamiliar infant for 3 days longer than expected. Right now he’s doing well, very big for his age. He can’t really move himself yet, but he has just started to kick his legs, moving himself slowly.

Once he starts understanding spoken English, I will make sure to keep him constantly stimulated so that he will be an intelligent child.

Broken iPod.

By Ethan Fortes | January 13, 2008

Recently, well actually not recently, like three weeks ago, my iPod fell in the toilet. Don’t ask how. I then left it in a dry place for about three days, during which I used my iPod mini. I wasn’t so worried about replacement, as I knew that wouldn’t be too much of an issue; what I was more worried about was my data. A day before the iPod incident, my External Hard Drive broke. This was the only place I had backed up the 50Gb of video I had sitting in my iPod. If I had lost that data, I would have to start all over again.
After the three days of no use, I plugged it into my macbook, and the screen turned on, it went into iTunes, and it synchronized perfectly, meaning all my data was still safe. After making an image of the drive so I can make a direct copy of the replaced or repaired one,  I realized that the click-wheel doesn’t work. This only renders my iPod useless until repair, so I continue to use my old mini until I get it fixed.
In two weeks I am going to be in Seattle, and I will take my iPod to the Apple Store there, and hopefully they will not realize it has been submerged in water.

New iPod.

By Ethan Fortes | January 12, 2008

Finally, I’ve gotten a new iPod. It replaces my old mini, which I no longer use as the battery life became absolutely atrocious.  It’s an 80GB Black iPod with video. I’ve loaded it with everything I have: TV Shows, Music, Movies, Diggnations, and Podcasts.
Although it is really handy to have your entire entertainment collection in your pocket, I often find it really slow when dealing with movies and menus. It’s also often difficult to watch a movie on such a small screen, especially while walking.
Another hassle is converting.Converting files to iPod format is really difficult, but I’m using iSquint which I have found to be very helpful and useful.
All in all it really is an excellent device, and I really enjoy using it.

MacBook going for repairs.

By Ethan Fortes | January 12, 2008

I’ve been waiting for the summer for a while. Since I’m going away to a sleep-away camp for the entire month of July. This is the perfect time to work on torrents, or send my MacBook in for repairs. My MacBook has encountered the following issues: - DVD Drive will not read disks - Screen flickers. (Apparently the “inverter cable” is “torn”) - Plate cover is coming off and chipped. I like to keep my stuff private, so I’ll make them a test account.
